Weaning Babies and Interview With Sabine – Excellent Article in Green Parent Magazine

By Sabine on 29 May 2009

Green Parent Magazine June/July 2009

Green Parent Magazine June/July 2009

The current edition of the Green Parent magazine (June/July 2009) features a thought provoking article on weaning babies and includes an interview with me talking about the value of organic and biodynamic baby foods.

Journalist Iris Coates discusses widely different weaning traditions around the world and looks at the confusing and conflicting advice that confronts parents as they approach this important stage in their baby’s development.

Baby Led Weaning

Coates concludes just what Ulula has been suggesting for the last four years. Parents should listen to and understand the current ‘official’ advice but also, more importantly,  ‘listen’ to their baby and his or her needs. You, as parents,  are the people who know your baby intimately and can best judge just when your baby is ready for weaning and how he or she reacts to the foods you gently introduce. Trust yourself and your baby and you will do what is best.

Organic Baby Foods Are Best For Babies

The article also points to research identifying the problems of non-organic baby foods and discusses the dangers of pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and other chemical nasties (over 260 of them are permitted!) to a baby’s delicate and developing body. Coates quotes Dr Vyvyan Howard of the University of Liverpool as saying:

“Choosing to feed your baby organically may be the single most important way to give them the best start in life.”

Organic baby foods are not just about what they don’t contain. Coates points to independent research that also shows how organic food has higher levels of nutrients, from vitamins and minerals to iron and essential fatty acids such as omega-3.

Tell us about your experiences of weaning babies – did you follow the official advice or did you take a more baby-led weaning approach?

Customer Ratings of Organic Baby Food – Coming Soon

By Sabine on 28 May 2009

I want the Ulula website to be as useful and informative as possible and to help busy mums and dads to make informed choices when shopping for baby food for their little ones.

A number of parents have recently suggested we implement a rating system so that shoppers can rate the baby foods and skin care ranges on the site. I loved this idea and asked Roger to come up with a technical solution that allows each customer to vote once on every product  – to give a rating out of 5.

So Roger has written and tested a custom rating system for the Ulula site and we have sent an email to well over two hundred customers asking them to give some initial ratings on products of their choice so that we could lauch the system with some already useful information. This was a big commitment to ask of customers – if you were one of the randomly chosen 250, a huge thank you from every one on the Ulula team. This whole exercise has been a heart warming example of how committed the Ulula community of parents is to making the site wok for other parents looking for premium organic baby food. Thank you to you all.

We have now reached our deadline for receivng these initial ratings and we now have the task of entering the ratings into the site database. Once this is done we will launch the new rating system and you are all encourged to vote for the products that you, your baby and the whole family enjoy. Look out for a special Ulula twist that Roger has built in.

The Ulula Team are Taking a Short Break

By Sabine on 27 May 2009

The Ulula team are taking a well earned short break in Germany from Thursday 28 May and will be back in the country eager to despatch baby food parcels from Monday 1 June.

We are actually going to north Germany, just around the corner from the latest supplier to sign up with us, Bohlsener Mill. We’ll be going to visit and stay with a university friend from my days when I trained originally as a food technologist specialising in grains and cereals – great experience for my involvement with Holle, who I believe sell the purest quality organic baby porridges on the market today.

Anyway, all orders placed between the above dates will be processed and despatched on Monday 1 June onwards. Thanks for your patience should you experience a slight delay in receiving your baby food at this time.

Holle Baby Porridge – Unlocking the Goodness

Holle prides itself not only on using the purest organic and biodynamic ingredients in its baby porridges but also on the gentle approach the company takes to producing its cereals. The Holle organic baby porridge range is made using the whole grain. Not only is the main body of the grain seed used but the entire kernel including the important outer bran layer. Therefore, the entire natural nutritional contents of the grain such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins are retained. Similarly, the important digestive qualities of the grain are retained because of the high, natural fibre content.

Through a unique manufacturing process, involving the carefully controlled application of heat and moisture, Holle is able to unlock the full goodness of the organic and biodynamic grain for your developing baby. This special process produces flakes that are readily soluble. This ensures that your baby can more easily digest and absorb the energy and vitality contained in every one of their organic porridges.

Whether your baby has an intolerance to milk protein or not, let us know which is your baby’s favourite Holle organic baby porridge.

Organic Baby Fruit Purees – A Quick Recipe Tip

By Sabine on 25 May 2009

It’s a bank holiday today so just a quick post with a lovely recipe tip sent in by customer Janice M.

Have leftover fruit purees from weaning your baby? Blend fruit purees with yoghurt (or coconut milk), water (or juice) and ice to make smoothies for the rest of the family.

We’ve tried this using purees made with the Ulula glass grater as well as some of the Holle organic fruit baby jars and they are lovely. Perfect for this warm weather. Enjoy!

A Natural Approach to Hayfever Relief for the Whole Family

By Sabine on 22 May 2009

Weleda Hayfever Survival Kit

Weleda Hayfever Survival Kit

  • Completely natural treatment
  • Can be used by all the family
  • Suitable for pregnant women

£9.75 each

Quantity:

As the milder weather approaches, an attack of sneezes, sniffles and watery eyes are on the way for some – hayfever season is on the way.

The bright green catkins on silver birch trees, that populate any bit of sandy heath, are a welcome sign of spring. But to 25% of hayfever sufferers they’re a warning of symptoms about to strike. Tree pollens hit early, some even in January, but for 95% of hayfever sufferers it’s late May until August (when grass pollens abound) that hayever symptoms really take hold, especially on dry, warm days.

Be prepared

Starting 4-6 weeks before symptoms are expected, try the isopathic approach. This means treating the condition with a minute amount of the substance causing the problem, and for that we have Weleda Mixed Pollen 30C (125 tablets). This mixture of air-borne pollens – from grasses, trees and weeds – is prepared homeopathically, and should generally be taken twice daily.

Soothe

To help clean nasal passages and/or to ease a nose left snore from sneezing and blowing, try Weleda Rhinodoron Nasal Spray (20ml). This can be used along with other homeopathic remedies, and is safe to use on a regular basis.

Top Tips

  • To prepare for the months ahead, try the Weleda Hayfever Survival Kit, containing two packs of Mixed Pollen 30C and a pack of Rhinodoron Nasal Spray;
  • Try wearing wrap-around sunglasses to stop pollen invading the eyes;
  • Keep car windows closed when driving near fields/gardens
  • Shower as soon as you’re home to remove pollen from hair and skin.
Pollen chart

Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor – Free to Download

By Sabine on 21 May 2009

Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor

Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor

With all first time orders of any Holle organic baby milk or baby food I give away a free copy of the Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor. This handy 40 page booklet is full of useful information on feeding your baby, from birth onwards, and includes information on weaning babies using natural, organic foods.

I know that mums are busy, especially mums with very young babies, and I know it is very easy to misplace such a booklet – so it is never a surprise to me when I get several phone calls a week asking if I could send a replacement with the next order. That, of course, is no problem. But at Ulula we like to try and make your life as easy as possible so I thought we would also post a link to the Baby Food Advisor in the blog every now and then so you can download a copy whenever you want it.

Here then is the Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor in PDF format (1.12 Mb): Holle Organic Baby Food Advisor

Holle tell us that at some point in the coming months they will be re-writing and re-printing their baby food advisor. So here is your chance also to let us know what you would like to be included in the guide. Send us your comments and we’ll forward them on to Holle. Thanks.

Organic Baby Rusks – Some Further Thoughts and Suggestions

By Sabine on 20 May 2009

I mentioned last week that the Holle Organic Baby Spelt Rusks are now available in their new packaging and gave you a few simple recipe ideas for weaning babies that use these sugar free rusks. I should also have mentioned that they really are not just for weaning  and teething babies.

Whenever my children are unwell, which thankfully is not often, I feed them what my mother gave me whenever I was recovering from illness – baby rusks soaked in tea. Simply take a couple of rusks, break them into a few pieces on a plate and pour over enough Holle organic baby tea to make them soggy. Mash with a fork and allow to cool. This lovely mild cereal is enough to tempt any child recovering from sickness.

Holle Baby Rusks – Not Just For Babies

I mentioned last week that on the continent rusks resemble toast more than biscuits. Actually such ‘toasty’ rusks aren’t just made for babies and are a popular snack for adults with butter and jams or cheeses or even more exciting toppings – great for buffets. As an alternative to the Holle Baby Rusks the ErdmanHAUSER rusks are made with butter and are specifically made to eat as party snacks – they taste absolutely delicious and are Demeter/biodynamically certified. For children and adults who have an intolerance to gluten I would recommend the Werz Four Grain Rusks which are gluten free.

Baby Rusks – Great for Morning Sickness

A number of mums have told me that they have found baby rusks perfect when they were pregnant and had morning sickness – a light, dry nibble was just what was needed to settle their tummy.

So, baby rusks are great for adults and babies alike – let me know how you like to eat yours.

Late Night Shopping for Baby Food – You Are Not Alone

By Sabine on 19 May 2009

Sleeping baby - sent in by a customer

Sleeping baby - sent in by a customer

I was working late last night and happened to be looking through the orders that we have received over the last few weeks or so. Despite it being late I noticed that a significant number of customers placed their orders also at a late hour – sometimes extremely late.

Crying Babies

I could image the situations that led to mums and dads being up so late and sat at their computer and they all revolved around crying babies. Perhaps the baby was hungry and needed another feed, or perhaps he or she was teething or had a soiled nappy.

You are Not Alone

So, if you happen to be reading this late at night having been woken by your crying baby, I can sympathise with you. I have been there, I have done that. It will get better, your baby will soon learn to sleep through and you will be able to enjoy an undisturbed sleep once again.

In the meantime, you are not alone. Remember other customers in the Ulula community are also shopping on the site – more likely than not just as you are reading this.

So, why not read a few articles, post a few comments and once your baby is sound asleep and tireness takes you over again slip off to bed yourself. Goodnight.
