Green Parent Magazine June/July 2009
The current edition of the Green Parent magazine (June/July 2009) features a thought provoking article on weaning babies and includes an interview with me talking about the value of organic and biodynamic baby foods.
Journalist Iris Coates discusses widely different weaning traditions around the world and looks at the confusing and conflicting advice that confronts parents as they approach this important stage in their baby’s development.
Baby Led Weaning
Coates concludes just what Ulula has been suggesting for the last four years. Parents should listen to and understand the current ‘official’ advice but also, more importantly, ‘listen’ to their baby and his or her needs. You, as parents, are the people who know your baby intimately and can best judge just when your baby is ready for weaning and how he or she reacts to the foods you gently introduce. Trust yourself and your baby and you will do what is best.
Organic Baby Foods Are Best For Babies
The article also points to research identifying the problems of non-organic baby foods and discusses the dangers of pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and other chemical nasties (over 260 of them are permitted!) to a baby’s delicate and developing body. Coates quotes Dr Vyvyan Howard of the University of Liverpool as saying:
“Choosing to feed your baby organically may be the single most important way to give them the best start in life.”
Organic baby foods are not just about what they don’t contain. Coates points to independent research that also shows how organic food has higher levels of nutrients, from vitamins and minerals to iron and essential fatty acids such as omega-3.
Tell us about your experiences of weaning babies – did you follow the official advice or did you take a more baby-led weaning approach?
