Special Offer – Half Price Baby Rusks With Spelt Baby Porridge

By Sabine on 7 September 2009

Spelt Porridge + Rusks

Holle organic spelt porridge and biscuits offer

Price: £9.70

Quantity:

Buy 3 cartons of Spelt Porridge and get 1 bag of Baby Spelt Rusks half price
SAVE £1.29

Well, it seem that summer is practically finished now and the days are noticeably shortening. The Ulula summer offer proved very popular with lots of customers, many of who tried the Bohlsener Mill mueslis and crunchies for the first time. But it is time now to think about changing to our autumn offer.

Because both the the spelt baby porridge and the spelt rusks are always favourites for so many of you, we decided to put the two together and give you the chance to save some money at the same time.

The delicious Holle Organic Spelt  Baby Porridge is so easy to prepare. Use either breast milk, baby formula or just water to prepare a wholesome porridge that your baby will love. It’s great on its own or mixed with home made fruit or vegetable puree for a grain based lunch for your baby.

Having trained many years ago as a miller, I love spelt. Spelt is an ancient grain dating back seven thousand years and has some fantastic qualities. It is naturally high in soluble dietary fibre, giving this baby porridge mild stool softening properties. Compared to wheat, spelt is also higher in the B-complex vitamins and both simple and complex carbohydrates. Spelt also contains significantly more protein – great for fast growing babies. Due to the nature of this grain, people who are gluten intolerant are often able to include spelt-based foods within their diet.

So, stock up on these two great spelt products and give your baby a treat.

Preparing Holle Baby Porridges – Avoiding Lumps

By Sabine on 3 June 2009

Sometimes parents tell me that they find it difficult to prepare the Holle organic baby porridges without lumps. I instantly know the problem and a simple piece of advice is all that is needed to quickly and simply prepare baby porridges with a fine, smooth consistency that is perfect for weaning babies.

Baby Porridges Without Lumps

So, how can the baby porridges be prepared in such a way as to completely avoid a lumpy texture? Simply add the liquid to the bowl first and then stir in the powdered baby porridge.

I think, as adults, we become so accustomed to mixing liquids into powders that we sometimes find this counter-intuitive and we automatically prepare the baby porridges the same way. But by closely following the instructions on the packaging lumps really should not occur, allowing you to feed your baby the perfect porridge.

Just a few other general pointers when feeding your baby with the Holle baby porridge range:

  • Please follow the ingredients measurements on the baby porridge packaging carefully. The correct amount of ingredients will ensure your baby receives the correct nutrients for his or her age and developmental stage.
  • Always prepare baby porridges freshly for each feed. Do not use leftovers.
  • Due to the risk of overheating, please do not heat baby porridges in a microwave.

Do let me know your questions about our organic baby foods and weaning babies – your questions can help others too.

Holle Baby Porridge – Unlocking the Goodness

Holle prides itself not only on using the purest organic and biodynamic ingredients in its baby porridges but also on the gentle approach the company takes to producing its cereals. The Holle organic baby porridge range is made using the whole grain. Not only is the main body of the grain seed used but the entire kernel including the important outer bran layer. Therefore, the entire natural nutritional contents of the grain such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins are retained. Similarly, the important digestive qualities of the grain are retained because of the high, natural fibre content.

Through a unique manufacturing process, involving the carefully controlled application of heat and moisture, Holle is able to unlock the full goodness of the organic and biodynamic grain for your developing baby. This special process produces flakes that are readily soluble. This ensures that your baby can more easily digest and absorb the energy and vitality contained in every one of their organic porridges.

Whether your baby has an intolerance to milk protein or not, let us know which is your baby’s favourite Holle organic baby porridge.

What to Feed Babies When Starting Weaning onto Solids

By Sabine on 30 April 2009

SAVE: £2.99
Baby Weaning Starter Kit

  • 1 carton of Holle Organic Rice Porridge
  • 1 carton of Holle Organic Millet Porridge
  • 1 organic cotton bib
  • 1 PVC-free weaning spoon
  • Free baby food advisor booklet (38 pages)
Price: £9.99

I am often emailed with questions about how to start weaning babies. Weaning a baby can be a stressful time for a new mum as she often doesn’t know what to give  or when and mums can frequently have concerns as to whether her baby is getting the right nutrition.

Firstly, I should say that every baby is different and what follows is general advice that should be fine for most babies. Relax, take your time and, as always, trust yourself to ‘listen’ to your baby, and if in doubt seek advice from a professional you trust.

Start with half a teaspoon of fresh apple puree (using a glass grater produces one of the best purees I know in small quantities). Your baby will not take a lot in the beginning – babies have to get used to the feel of solids and learn how to move to the back of his or her mouth in order to swallow it.

If your baby spits the food out or cries, ty again later or even tomorrow. The important thing is to get used to sucking or licking food from a spoon. While mentioning spoons, I really would recommend using plastic ones (preferably PVC free) as metal spoons can be quite cold and quite a shock to a baby’s sensitive mouth.

A few days later you can add 1 tablespoon Holle Organic Rice Porridge to the puree. Once your baby is used to the puree you could either start making rice or millet porridge with breast milk or baby formula.

Again after a week or two you can start giving him one or two teaspoons of carrot puree. Gradually increase the amount of solids according to your baby’s appetite.

I do not recommend a huge variety of fruit or vegetables at first as this can confuse babies and there is even a discussion about developing a risk of allergy when too many different foods are given. You baby needs security and can be happy with little.

If your baby is a good eater you can change/add vegetables over the coming weeks. Take your baby’s pace. There aren’t any “must gives”.

Soon your baby will be eating his baby porridge for breakfast (with fruit puree), he or she can have a sugar free rusk and/or a breast feed in the later morning, a vegetable/grain based lunch, a milk free porridge in the afternoon and a milk based porridge in the evening.
I usually send out a Holle Baby Food Advisor with any first order. The advisor contains lots of useful tips as well as full information about the Holle organic baby food ranges. You can also download the advisor from the Ulula weaning advice pages.

Let me know your experiences of weaning. What advice and tips would you give mums about to start weaning their babies?

Organic Babymuesli Porridge – New Recipe

By Sabine on 24 April 2009

In this final news item from the Organic and Natural Products exhibition in Olympia we can announce that the ever popular Holle Babymuesli baby cereal now has a new recipe. The base cereal for the porridge has changed to wholegrain semolina, while the raisins have been taken out altogether and replaced by banana, apple and raspberry.

Altogether these substantial recipe changes have made this a highly attractive baby porridge. Early taste tests were extremely favourable – the naturally sweet cereal was complemented by a tasty fruitiness that was very popular. Holle are definitely onto a winner.

Holle Organic Babymuesli porridge is quick to prepare, easy to digest and dairy free. As with all Holle’s baby porridges it can be prepared with breast milk, baby milk or formula, water or any other liquid.

We are sometimes asked if this baby porridge really is suitable for babies – it seems the name ‘muesli’ conjures up images of rather lumpy, chewy cereals, not the kind of food to be feeding babies in  the early stages of weaning. But yes, the Babymuesli is perfect for your little one – it is in powdered form and makes a very smooth, lump free baby porridge.

For older babies, toddler and even adults Holle Organic Baby Muesli Porridge can though make a nutritious snack when mixed with fresh fruit, yoghurt, raisins and nuts (after 12 months of age). Enjoy.

Given this recipe change has just been announced, we are very pleased to be in a position to offer it for sale immediately – try the Holle Organic Babymuesli now.

Liquids Suitable for Preparing Baby Porridges

By Sabine on 23 April 2009

Just a quick post. Concerned mums often ask me about what liquids they can or should use to prepare the Holle baby porridge for their little ones.
You can actually use many liquids – expressed breast milk, organic baby milks or formulas or even plain water. As they get older, around 12 months or so, you can introduce (diluted) juices.  If you are using normal dairy milk I would suggest to use organic full fat milk which is not homogenised. Please read the packaging because most milks sold in supermarkets are homogenised. Of course, avoid liquids with added sugars and if giving juices make sure it is not only from an organic source but also not from concentrate. I think it is really worth spending a few more pennies on good quality food for our children especially when they are so young and vulnerable.

Try your baby with a variety of liquids according to the type of meal you are giving him or her and watch for their preferences. Have fun!
