I am really pleased to announce the arrival on the Ulula website of our organic pasta for babies and children. If you’ve not seen them already, take a look and see why I’m so excited.

Pasta is always a children’s favourite and these three fun pasta shapes are ideal for slightly older babies and children of all ages. Pasta is highly nutritious and a great energy source for your growing baby or child. From 8 to 10 months your baby usually needs more lumpy food and this lovely shaped organic pasta will help to encourage chewing and introduce variety.

In Search of the Best Pasta for Babies and Children

I spent a long time searching for a pasta that I would be happy to sell to discerning mums and dads. I wanted a pasta small enough for young babies’ mouths; that kids would enjoy eating because they easily recognise the varied shapes; and that is made from the highest quality ingredients by a company that really cares about both food and the environment.

These new pastas come from Alb Gold, a traditional family-owned company with a proven organic background and who take great care in not only choosing their raw ingredients but also how each pasta is made. As usual with the food I stock on Ulula, you are guaranteed that you will only be feeding your baby food that has not been grown with the use of artificial pesticides or fertilisers and which has no artificial preservatives, colourings or any other chemical nasty. I only stock those foods that I am happy to feed to my own family.

And so, how do these pastas for babies measure up? As usual, we asked family and friends to taste test these pasta shapes with their babies and children. Without exception the feedback was great – a particular favourite with the youngest children were the farm animal pasta shapes, while older children loved the roaring safari animal pasta shapes and the dinosaur pasta shapes. A definite winner with babies, children and mums and dads alike.

Mums and dads told us how their little ones ‘loved the animal shapes’, ‘had fun making all sorts of animal noises’ and several commented how ‘having such fun at meal times encouraged him to eat everything in his bowl.’

These delightful pasta animals are specially developed for babies and children and, as such, are small enough for your baby’s mouth – so no choking on adult sized pasta. And every animal piece keeps its shape even after cooking – which makes it great fun to eat as your baby spots the animals he or she knows.

When Bohlsener Mill were developing these cereals they got feedback from hundreds of children. For example, many kids said they didn’t want raisins – although they’re sweet they really don’t appeal to lots of children.

As with all products that I sell on the Ulula website, I undertook some trials of my own amongst our regular group of taste testers. “Look, mum, the milk is pink!” was the first comment from one little one while the older children found the vanilla stars “pretty awesome”. Every tester loved the delicious mild taste and the varied textures from the grains, flakes and shapes.  Bohlsener Mill are certainly on to a winner with their new cereals for kids.

Organic Fruit Bars For Older Babies – Sales of Surprise Bestsellers to Be Temporarily Limited

We have been told by Holle baby foods that their delicious Organic fruit Bars for older babies and toddlers continue to sell out in Europe and that they can only just keep up with demand. This is certainly also the case here at Ulula, the fruit bars have become overnight snack bestsellers.

Thankfully, I was able to negotiate a good quantity in Ulula’s last delivery of baby food. However, I would like to make sure that all my customers have the chance to buy the fruit bars when they need them for their babies. Because the bars are so popular I want to be fair in how they are distributed.

Therefore, could I ask customers to please restrict the number of the Holle Organic Fruit Bars that you buy to no more than four multi-packs per order? Obviously, I won’t limit the amount that you can place in the site shopping basket. But for the next month or so, if I could be cheeky and ask you not to buy more than 4 multi packs per order, then that should ensure everyone will be able to buy at least some of the fruit bars.

The sell-out Traffix biscuits for children are now back in stock and are extremely popular with babies and toddlers from 12 months onwards. These tasty snacks are liked by health conscious parents too because their delicious taste comes only from pure, natural ingredients that don’t include lots of unnecessary nasties. I am often asked by mums who have been weaning their babies with the Holle Organic Millet Baby Porridge what they they could feed their children as they get older.

Firstly, I would say that I have countless mums who continue to buy baby porridges even when their baby is actually well beyond the toddler age and has started primay school.  That familiar smell, texture and yummy taste all go to make for a comforting breakfast several times a week, as well as being quick for a busy mum or dad to prepare.

For those that want to move beyond just baby porridges, and who want something different that the whole family could eat, I usually advise introducing organic millet grains.

Millet – Not Just For Parrots!

Roger tells me that millet as a grain has bad press here in England, that it is usually thought of as ‘bird food’. In my native Germany and elsewhere on the continent though, millet is often eaten as an accompaniment or actually in meals. At home, we probably eat it once a week and enjoy its nutty flavour in a variety of meals.

Millet is actually one of the oldest cultivated cereal grains in the world and is very rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Millet is a gluten free grain that has a significant amount of minerals, vitamins and trace elements – in particular silicic acid, which influences the healthy growth of bones, hair, nails and skin. So overall, a healthy option and a lovely alternative to rice.

Preparing and Cooking Organic Millet

Organic millet is easy to cook, just cook one part of the organic millet grain (allow approx 100g per adult) with two parts water or stock, until the water is absorbed and season with herbs.

Serve with vegetables or a tomato-based sauce. As well as being nutritious and filling, millet is good value for money if you have to feed a family and ideal for those with a gluten intolerance.

Quick Summer Millet Recipe

Sabine’s tip for a quick summer recipe – cook the millet in vegetable stock with some mixed herbs and a dash of tomato puree. Leave to cool, add cucumber cubes, yoghurt or tsatsiki and season with lots of dill. Yummy!
