Weaning Your Baby This Christmas? Some Menu Suggestions

By Sabine on 26 November 2010

Advent marks the start of the coming festive season. A special time of the year for children of all ages. Who can resist the message of the nativity, the gathering together of friends and the celebratory meals shared with family?

Of course, Christmas with a baby in the house is particularly lovely. You naturally want to include your little one in the celebrations alongside the rest of the family. But Christmas cooking can be stressful enough without needing to plan the baby’s menu. To help at this busy time I’ve put together a few Christmas weaning suggestions. You can concentrate on the food for the rest of the family secure in the knowledge you have some tasty, organic treats in store for baby.

Christmas Weaning Meals

When it comes to the traditional meals such as turkey and all the trimmings there’s no reason for your baby or toddler to miss out. Or to compromise on the quality of food you want to give your little one.

Take a look at our seasonal meat offerings:

We also have a fine selection of seasonal meals for vegetarian babies:

And course, don’t forget the trimmings:

While we won’t be feeding our babies the Christmas pudding just yet, we do have some fantastic fruit purees that will slip down a treat:

Of course, as with all the Holle baby food ranges you have peace of mind that you are feeding your baby only the best:

  • Certified organic or even biodynamic -no pesticides or other chemical nasties;
  • Gluten free -ideal for first weaning meals;
  • Free from sugar, salt, colourings and preservatives -these have no place in baby food;
  • Prepared using gentle cooking methods -to keep the most goodness for your baby.

I hope all Ulula customers and site visitors have a wonderful Christmas and are able to take some time to relax with their families and friends. Very best of the new seasons greetings.

Sabine

PS. A treat for mums and dads too
Just to help me get in the Christmas spirit while writing this email I’ve been nibbling on a few of our Organic Vanilla Spelt Crescents. Believe me when I say they are absolutely gorgeous. They were our bestselling biscuits for adults last year and I can see why. Pop a packet or two in your basket and you won’t regret it. After all, Christmas isn’t just for children!

Gluten Free Snacks for Weaning Babies – Rice Bran Nibbles Are Back in Stock

By Sabine on 4 December 2009

Thankfully we have managed to get the popular Werz Organic Rice Bran Nibbles back in stock. These certified organic gluten free snacks are always a hit with parents who want to wean their babies with sugar free treats. The small size are perfect for your baby’s little hands to hold properly and as they are nibbled they slowly disintegrate, giving your baby a satisfying experience.

I think one of the reasons the Rice Bran Nibbles are so popular is that there are not many savoury snacks that are gluten free and suitable for very young babies on the UK market. Stock up for Christmas as they sell well with our regular mums and dads.

Incidentally, we have lots of mums and dads who eat the rice bran nibbles themselves – perfect with dips. So, whether you have a gluten intolerance or not try these nibbles this Christmas party season.

Gluten Free Snacks – Some Sugar Free Sweet Alternatives

By Sabine on 28 October 2009

Organic four grain biscuits with carrots - young children love them

Organic four grain biscuits with carrots - young children love them

The popularity of the Werz Rice Bran Nibbles never ceases to amaze me. They really are one of the few organic gluten free snacks that are ideal for young babies. I think one of the reasons the Rice Bran Nibbles are so popular is that there are not many savoury snacks that are gluten free and suitable for very young babies on the UK market.

Unfortunately it is very hard to keep up with demand and we have today sold the last packet of our current batch. Be assured we are awaiting our next delivery and will keep you informed.

If you are uncertain of offering sweet products to young children you may wish to consider our range of gluten free and sugar free sweet snacks. This small and exclusive range is free from added processed sugar and is sweetened using only natural organic ingredients such as rice syrup or honey. My particular favourites are the rabbit shaped Organic Four Grain Biscuits with Carrots. They come in packets of mixed boy and girl rabbits and are great fun – young  children love them!

Organic Millet Grains – New and Available for Immediate Despatch

By Sabine on 16 June 2009

Organic Millet

Organic millet grain

  • Gluten free
  • Easy to cook
  • Nutritious and filling
  • Instant

£2.25 for 500 g bag

I am often asked by mums who have been weaning their babies with the Holle Organic Millet Baby Porridge what they they could feed their children as they get older.

Firstly, I would say that I have countless mums who continue to buy baby porridges even when their baby is actually well beyond the toddler age and has started primay school.  That familiar smell, texture and yummy taste all go to make for a comforting breakfast several times a week, as well as being quick for a busy mum or dad to prepare.

For those that want to move beyond just baby porridges, and who want something different that the whole family could eat, I usually advise introducing organic millet grains.

Millet – Not Just For Parrots!

Roger tells me that millet as a grain has bad press here in England, that it is usually thought of as ‘bird food’. In my native Germany and elsewhere on the continent though, millet is often eaten as an accompaniment or actually in meals. At home, we probably eat it once a week and enjoy its nutty flavour in a variety of meals.

Millet is actually one of the oldest cultivated cereal grains in the world and is very rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Millet is a gluten free grain that has a significant amount of minerals, vitamins and trace elements – in particular silicic acid, which influences the healthy growth of bones, hair, nails and skin. So overall, a healthy option and a lovely alternative to rice.

Preparing and Cooking Organic Millet

Organic millet is easy to cook, just cook one part of the organic millet grain (allow approx 100g per adult) with two parts water or stock, until the water is absorbed and season with herbs.

Serve with vegetables or a tomato-based sauce. As well as being nutritious and filling, millet is good value for money if you have to feed a family and ideal for those with a gluten intolerance.

Quick Summer Millet Recipe

Sabine’s tip for a quick summer recipe – cook the millet in vegetable stock with some mixed herbs and a dash of tomato puree. Leave to cool, add cucumber cubes, yoghurt or tsatsiki and season with lots of dill. Yummy!

Let me know how you and your family like the Organic Millet and send us in your favourite recipes to share with other mums and dads.

Holle have recently announced a change in their recipe for the Organic Three Grain Baby Porridge – the cereal is now the first gluten free multi-grain baby porridge on the market.

The Swiss organic baby food manufacturer has just launched the new 3 grain baby porridge recipe on the continent and we are pleased to already have an ample supply of cases of the gluten free version available to purchase.

Holle Organic Three Grain Baby Porridge – Ingredients

The Holle Organic Three Grain Baby Porridge is made from three popular gluten free organic/biodynamic grains – rice, corn and millet – and is suitable for all babies including those with a gluten intolerance and those who wish to avoid feeding their babies with foods containing gluten before the age of 6 months.

When and How to Use?

The 3 grain is an ideal porridge during the second and third stages of weaning your baby.

As with all Holle baby porridges you can prepare the Organic Three Grain Porridge for your baby’s breakfast with breast milk, baby milk formula or even water.

By adding freshly prepared fruit puree (quickly and simply prepared using the Ulula glass grater) or adding some teaspoons of one of the Holle fruit jars your baby will enjoy a delicious and nutritious afternoon snack.

To make a lunch for your baby just add the Holle gluten free Three Grain Baby Porridge to your home made vegetable puree or mix with Holle carrots, carrots with apple or parsnips.

Let us know how your baby likes the new gluten free recipe for the Holle Three Grain Baby Porridge, whether he or she has a gluten intolerance or not.

Organic Honey Marzipan Heart From Werz – Temporarily Out of Stock

By Sabine on 6 May 2009

Werz Organic Marzipan Honey Heart

Werz Organic Marzipan Honey Heart

The company Werz specialises in making premium quality organic finger foods, snacks and bakery products that are also suitable for people with all kinds of allergies and intolerances.

Werz is practically unheard of outside the German speaking countries, which I think is such a shame – they have a huge range of gluten free foods that taste simply fantastic. One reason the Werz products taste so good is that they only mill their flours on the day they bake the food, this way the ingredients are at their freshest and retain more of their nutrients. As a trained miller, I know just how rare this approach taken by Werz is – you really can taste the difference.

Organic Mondi Spelt Chocolate Biscuit

Organic Mondi Spelt Chocolate Biscuit

One of the Werz fun snacks are their Organic Honey Marzipan Hearts, just right for giving to those you love as an everyday wholesome treat. The hearts have gained a loyal following of buyers who regularly place a dozen or so in with each order and I haven’t been able to keep up with demand. So, many apologies for being temporarily out of stock of this popular treat – we will be placing another order with Werz shortly and will make sure we add plenty of boxes of these delicious hearts to the list. We’ll post another news snippet once we take delivery, and thank you for your patience.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for another fun snack or treat for that someone special in your life, why not try the Werz Mondi Spelt Chocolate Biscuits? These big smiley faces are made with Demeter wholemeal spelt flour, are sweetened only with organic honey and are topped with cocoa and carob icing – simply delicious. At just £3.49 for a multi-pack of 5 they are excellent value and are guaranteed to produce smiles on the faces of whoever you give them to!

Gluten Free Foods – Customer Feedback and a New Menu For People with Gluten Intolerance

By Sabine on 3 May 2009

As existing customers will already know, I try to make sure I personalise the service I offer and always write a little note with every order. Many customers email or write back and tell me more about their babies and families.

When H. placed an order recently I assumed she was buying for her baby, but it seems the gluten free food she was buying was really for herself. This isn’t actually that unusual, because although Ulula is a online shop for organic baby food, we do sell many food items that are suitable for older children as well as adult members of the family with gluten intolerance.

Hi Sabine
Thankyou for your note with my recent order.
the items are i’m ordering are actually for myself (a rather overgrown child!) not my baby.
since finding out i have a severe gluten intolerance i’ve really really missed wheat based crispbreads – ricecakes are for me a rather poor substitute, but having found your products, i now don’t feel i’m missing out at all.they are fantastic and have given me such a boost as i’m now feeliing so healthy without gluten, but am also loving everything i’m eating which is important!
also thankyou for your quick and reliable service. i’ve been very impressed al round.
very best wishes
H.

A New Gluten Free Menu Structure

After receiving H.’s email we had another look at our gluten free menu item and quickly realised that the gluten free category page was rather unwieldly, with currently over 70 items on one page!

We, therefore, had a rethink about how we present the gluten free foods and have restructured the menu item to make it more user friendly. The menu now resembles the following structure:

So, thanks to H. for the kind comments and for the idea to improve how we present our gluten free products. Hopefully we have made it easier for everyone with a gluten intolerance to quickly find the foods they are looking for.

Do you or a baby or child you buy food for have a gluten intolerance? If so, how do you find our new ‘gluten free’ menu structure? Let us know.
