I am often asked by mums who have been weaning their babies with the Holle Organic Millet Baby Porridge what they they could feed their children as they get older.

Firstly, I would say that I have countless mums who continue to buy baby porridges even when their baby is actually well beyond the toddler age and has started primay school.  That familiar smell, texture and yummy taste all go to make for a comforting breakfast several times a week, as well as being quick for a busy mum or dad to prepare.

For those that want to move beyond just baby porridges, and who want something different that the whole family could eat, I usually advise introducing organic millet grains.

Millet – Not Just For Parrots!

Roger tells me that millet as a grain has bad press here in England, that it is usually thought of as ‘bird food’. In my native Germany and elsewhere on the continent though, millet is often eaten as an accompaniment or actually in meals. At home, we probably eat it once a week and enjoy its nutty flavour in a variety of meals.

Millet is actually one of the oldest cultivated cereal grains in the world and is very rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Millet is a gluten free grain that has a significant amount of minerals, vitamins and trace elements – in particular silicic acid, which influences the healthy growth of bones, hair, nails and skin. So overall, a healthy option and a lovely alternative to rice.

Preparing and Cooking Organic Millet

Organic millet is easy to cook, just cook one part of the organic millet grain (allow approx 100g per adult) with two parts water or stock, until the water is absorbed and season with herbs.

Serve with vegetables or a tomato-based sauce. As well as being nutritious and filling, millet is good value for money if you have to feed a family and ideal for those with a gluten intolerance.

Quick Summer Millet Recipe

Sabine’s tip for a quick summer recipe – cook the millet in vegetable stock with some mixed herbs and a dash of tomato puree. Leave to cool, add cucumber cubes, yoghurt or tsatsiki and season with lots of dill. Yummy!

Organic Baby Fruit Purees – A Quick Recipe Tip

By Sabine on 25 May 2009

It’s a bank holiday today so just a quick post with a lovely recipe tip sent in by customer Janice M.

Have leftover fruit purees from weaning your baby? Blend fruit purees with yoghurt (or coconut milk), water (or juice) and ice to make smoothies for the rest of the family.

We’ve tried this using purees made with the Ulula glass grater as well as some of the Holle organic fruit baby jars and they are lovely. Perfect for this warm weather. Enjoy!

Preparing Purees for Weaning Babies – Glass Grater Video

By Sabine on 22 April 2009

A very popular product on the Ulula website is our glass grater for helping busy mums to prepare homemade baby food recipes when weaning their baby. Watch our short video to see just how simple it is to use – it’s pretty amazing.

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

Glass graters have been used for generations by mums to prepare pureed fruit and vegetables when first weaning their babies. Using a glass grater gives you exactly the right consistency of fruit or vegetables you need when preparing your home made baby food. Experience shows us that no other grater can achieve this consistency with so little mess or waste.

We’re proud to be the exclusive UK suppliers of the glass grater. We are pleased also with our little video clip (it’s regularly downloaded by hundreds of site visitors) showing how to use the grater.

We are thinking of producing some more videos and have in the pipeline something to show you how to prepare the Holle organic baby milks and the Holle organic baby porridge ranges.

What do you think? What other videos about our organic baby food products would you find useful?
