Vegetarian Baby Milk and Holle Infant Formula

By Sabine on 19 August 2010

I receive several enquiries every week asking whether the Holle organic baby milks are suitable for vegetarians, so I thought I would publish a quick article letting everybody know the situation.

It is currently impossible to source vegetarian baby milk derived from cows milk. The only fully suitable vegetarian baby milk is the Holle Organic Goats Milk Formula, which is also the only certified organic goats milk for babies on the market.

Whenever I talk to Holle about this situation they tell me that they would desparately like to make their baby milks and formulas suitable for vegetarian babies and families. As a caring and ethical company they have enormous sympathies with animal welfare issues. The organic full cream milk used in Holle baby milks and formulas comes from cows raised biodynamically in the organic fields and pastures of Germany and Austria. The superior quality of their infant formulas derives from the traditionally high quality farming and the expert care the animals receive, as well as the naturally lush vegetation available to the cows.

Vegetarian Baby Milks – The Difficulties

As a company, Holle has a policy of working to make their baby milks suitable for vegetarians and, as such, do not add any fish oils to their baby milks – unlike some other baby milk companies.

However, they are not yet able to source sufficient quanitities of  whey powder, which they are required to add by the strict EU baby milk and formula regulations, from strict vegetarian sources. Whenever they can source the whey from vegetarian sources they do so, but it is currently almost impossible to get vegetarian whey powder in the amounts baby food manufacturers would need to offer a consistent supply.

The company is constantly talking with its trusted biodynamic and organic farmers and suppliers as to how to work towards a more reliable supply of vegetarian whey powder for use in its baby milk. As soon as we hear any news we will post further articles on this blog and update our product descriptions.

Your Views on Vegetarian Baby Milks

I also pass on all your enquiries about vegetarian baby milks to Holle so that they continue to realise the importance of this issue to many mums and dads. So, if you would like to leave your comments here, I can guarantee that your voice will be heard.

Thank you very much for your inquiry.
Of the Holle Organic formulas only the goats milk is currently fully suitable for vegetarians.
Holle doesn’t add any fish oil but their organic whey powder does come from mixed sources. Some batches are vegetarian, others aren’t or are mixed. Apparently it is currently almost impossible to get vegetarian whey powder in the amount baby food manufacturers would need.
As far as I know, Holle is currently talking to their trusted suppliers and would very much like to offer organic baby milk formulas which are suitable for vegetarians.
After extensive inquiries I have found that there aren’t any organic vegetarian baby milk formulas available on the UK market at the moment.
I know how important it must be for you because I do get lot of inquiries like yours. I do keep Holle informed and am in close contact with the Swiss manufacturer.
Sorry that I couldn’t help you this time with the formula. Nevertheless Holle and Ulula does offer a comprehensive range of vegetarian and vegan food suitable for all weaning stages.
Best wishes

Organic Finger Foods – A Junk Free Concept?

By Sabine on 27 April 2009

At Ulula we believe finger foods and snacks for weaning babies should be not just tasty and fun but also healthy, wholesome treats that help children develop a taste for and love of good food.

It goes without saying that parents play a vital role in educating their children, and that in the first years before a child starts ‘formal education’ much of their learning for their life ahead has already taken place. Nowhere is this probably more true than with our childrens attitudes towards food. Babies learn what good food is only if we feed them good food.

On a recent shopping expedition Roger and I were amazed to see a baby that could not have been older than nine months being fed what looked like a bag of crisps. When we looked closer we could see that what the baby was eating were not crisps as such but rather a pack of  ‘finger foods for babies’. We were so shocked that we went out and bought ourselves several packets from the nearest branch of a well known high street chemist chain to investigate further.

Looking closer at the packets we bought we could see that the ingredients in these crisp-like baby snacks were actually not too bad at all – they were organic and there certainly was no junk.

However, the actual snacks themselves looked just like certain well known crisps varieties and were in packaging that can only be described as looking like crisp packets. They even tasted like milder versions of crisp varieties.

Is this really what we want to be feeding our young babies when they are weaning? Britain already eats more than half of all the crisps and similar savoury snacks eaten in the whole of Europe and is set by the year 2020 for a fifth of all boys and a third of all girls to be clinically obese. We are not saying that these weaning snacks for babies are to blame for this, but we must question whether encouraging our children to eat such things at such an early time in their life really educates them as to what is really good, wholesome food.

The ingredients in these crisps for babies may not contain junk – but this is certainly a junk concept.

Of course, Ulula sells organic finger foods and snacks for babies and growing children (both sweet and savoury), that we source from hand picked companies that we believe take the care to make products that are not only tasty but also wholesome. There are also other companies out there that also sell good quality finger foods and snacks for babies. I guess, the challenge for us as parents is how to choose snacks and treats for our babies that will help them develop a taste for good food that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

What are your experiences of feeding your baby finger foods and snacks? What useful hints can you share with other parents?

High Quality Organic Baby Food – All Ingredients Listed

By Sabine on 19 April 2009

Further to our recent article on soya in baby milks I thought we should point out that the Ulula website lists all ingredients for every product that we stock, without exception.

In a similar vein, we had a phone call recently from a gentleman wanting sugar free breakfast cereals who had bought some millet pops from elsewhere having been told they were 100% millet, only to find on taking delivery that the ingredients on the packaging listed millet and a substantial amount of sugar. He wanted to check that our millet pops were indeed sugar free.

We don’t try to hide the ingredients of our foods, we list every ingredient so that you can decide for yourself if that particular product is for you or your baby. We are proud to be selective in the baby, toddler and family foods that we stock – you can taste the difference.

And yes, our millet pops are indeed sugar free.
