Biodynamic agriculture is a comprehensive approach to farming established in 1924 by Dr Rudolf Steiner. The standards for biodynamic farming far exceed those of the European Union for organic agriculture. There are biodynamic farms and gardens in more than 30 countries throughout five continents.
Biodynamic and Organic CertificationBiodynamic produce, including Holle baby food, is marketed under the Demeter label. Biodynamic/Demeter farms are regulated twice, firstly by the EU organic certification body and secondly by Demeter. This is, of course, a huge advantage for the concerned parent wanting to give his/her baby the very best start in life.
It may be useful to provide a few examples to illustrate the Demeter approach to farming.
You can’t get more organic than biodynamic
Biodynamic farmers view a farm as a complete and self supporting living organism. This means a farm needs to have a balance of fields for crops, animal paddocks and animals. If this balance is right a farmer doesn’t need to buy in any feed or seeds from outside. The cows on biodynamic farms have horns unlike most other farms.
A biodynamic farm must be 100% biodynamic, it is not possible, within the Demeter standards, to have some fields in organic or conventional farming. Most biodynamic farms use their own seeds instead of buying them from elsewhere. Biodynamic farmers take the cosmic rhythm into consideration when sowing and reaping and also use enriching homeopathic preparations on the soil.
Biodynamic farmers try to improve the soil and environment instead of 'just' not exploiting it too much. Or even more succinctly: "You can’t get more organic than biodynamic".
The Demeter standard not only regulates the production of the raw ingredients, but also their processing, for example, no artificial flavourings are allowed.
