Dill is a delicious, easy-to-grow herb. The feathery, aromatic leaves have a slight aniseed flavour and can be used in salads or fish and lamb dishes, while the seeds and flower heads can be used for pickling cucumbers or making chutneys. It was also once a popular remedy for coughs and headaches. A beautiful ornamental plant similar to fennel with umbels of yellow flowers, Dill is also a magnet for different kinds of wildlife, attracting bees, hoverflies and butterflies.

Indoor Sowing: Sow seeds from February in small pots or plugs.  Plant out the plugs after all risk of frost has passed, about 20cm apart.
Outdoor Sowing: Sow the seeds thinly in well prepared soil or in a large pot from April when the soil has warmed up. The seedlings will emerge in around two weeks. Further sowings can be made during the spring and early summer to extend the harvest time. Dill hates having its roots being disturbed or being transplanted, so plant out young seedlings where you wish them to remain avoid potting them on.
Growing instructions: Keep young plants well-watered, particularly during hot, dry weather. They may need additional support from canes, as strong winds can flatten them.  A perennial herb, it will die back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
