Description

The Halloween classic, this trailing plant has medium sized orange fruits. As well as perfect for carving, it has a fantastic flavour and is ideal for soups, pies, tarts, cakes and curries. For larger fruits, simply stop the stems or remove new flowers, when 2 pumpkins have begun to develop and these should grow up to 4-7kg.

Info & Care

10 seeds

Sow indoors: Sow squash seeds on their side 12 - 20mm deep in small pots of good compost from late March through April. Propagate under glass or place on a windowsill. Germination takes 10-14 days. Transplant the seedlings into bigger pots when large enough to handle. Keep barely moist and protect from strong light. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed.
Growing instructions: Grow outdoors in a sunny, sheltered place or in cold-frames in moisture and humus rich soil and water the base of the plant (not the leaves or fruit) regularly, especially in dry weather. Plant one plant for 1-2 m². If the late summer is very wet place a large stone or a brick under the fruits to prevent rotting. Harvest in late September/October when the stalks have dried out and the skin has changed colour and toughened up. You can tell when they're ready by tapping them - if they sound hollow, they're ready.
