Here’s a beautifully simple and wholesome recipe for homemade apple purée pudding, perfect for autumn days and family meals. Naturally sweet, it is freezer-friendly and packed with goodness.

Homemade Apple Pudding

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 organic cooking apples or dessert apples

Method:

  1. Wash and core the apples, removing any bruised or bad bits. There is no need to peel them.
  2. Slice into a saucepan containing enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Cook with the lid on and once the apples start to cook, stir occasionally.
  3. Cook until soft and fluffy (dessert apples will be less fluffy then cooking apples) then leave to cool.
  4. Push through a sieve to remove the skin and any coarse pieces of core still remaining.
  5. Sweeten to taste with sugar or honey if necessary.
  6. Serve warm or chilled from the fridge.

Apple pudding is delicious served with crème fraiche or greek yogurt and a shortbread biscuit. Alternatively sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with vanilla ice cream and pancakes.

As well as a family pudding, apple purée is a gentle and nourishing first food, perfect for introducing babies to new flavours and textures. Naturally sweet and easy to digest, it’s packed with vitamin C and fibre, making it both wholesome and satisfying.

Options:

Add blackberries or plums to the apples while cooking for a real autumn feast. For those of you who love traditional puddings, add a crumble topping and cook for 20 minutes at gas mark 4, 180°C.

You can peel and core the apples before cooking, which removes the need to sieve. However, leaving the peel on during cooking may help retain more of the apple’s natural goodness, including fibre and antioxidants. If your apples aren’t organic, it’s best to peel them or give them a thorough wash to remove any pesticide residues. Even organic apples deserve a good rinse before eating or cooking.
