Made from natural materials, this lovely DIY activity brings a touch of magic to outdoor play. There’s something special about being outside at dusk, where the world feels different, quieter, and full of wonder. Why not make your own hazelnut boats and head to a nearby pond or stream to set them off on a twilight adventure? Whether they’re racing across water or glowing gently in the twilight, these hazelnut boats offer a delightful autumn adventure full of creativity, imagination, and a lovely connection to nature.

This is what you need:

  • Pine bark: for the hull of the boats
  • Knife or peeler
  • Hand drill
  • Toothpick to hold the hazelnut
  • Small twig or long toothpick for the mast
  • Hazelnuts
  • Large leaves for the sails

Important: Do not take pine bark directly from the tree trunk. Instead, pick it up from the ground. The softer the bark, the easier it is to carve into shape.

Here's how to make your hazelnut boats:

  1. Prepare the hull: Collect larger pieces of pine bark from the ground and carve into the shape of a small boat.
  2. Attach the mast: Drill two small holes in the bark with the hand drill, one in front of the other. Make sure that there is enough distance between them so that the sail won't catch light.
  3. Hoist the sails: Divide a toothpick, one short piece is needed for the hazelnut. A long toothpick or twig is needed for the sail. Insert them into the drilled holes (secure with some modelling wax if needed to hold them securely upright). Attach the leaf and push on the hazelnut.
  4. Set sail: Now the boat are ready set sail! Very carefully light the hazelnut by holding the nut to the flame of a candle (the nut should burns for about 3 minutes), and watch your little magical spectacle.

Tip: Have a race and let your boats compete against each other!
