It’s so easy to create magical little works of art with your children. When the cold turns the outdoors into a quiet winter wonderland and frost sparkles on the grass and branches, it’s a lovely moment to make an ice suncatcher. With the natural treasures you’ve gathered, you can create delicate pieces that shimmer softly in the winter sun.
This is what you will need:
- Foraged natural materials
- Boiled or distilled water
- Freezer-proof container
Here's how to make your ice suncatcher:
- Gather a few lovely natural bits and pieces while you’re out playing or exploring the garden or park. You can also use slices of fruit, such as apple or orange.
- Once you’re home, arrange your leaves, berries, flowers or small pine cones in a freezer‑safe container. Remember to tuck in a loop of string or twine so you can hang it up later.
- Pour in some water — boiled or distilled works best if you’d like the ice to freeze clear rather than cloudy.
- Pop your creation into the freezer, or leave it outside overnight if the weather is cold enough.
- After a few hours, check to see if it has frozen solid. Once it’s firm, ease it out of the container and hang it somewhere outdoors. It looks especially lovely when the sunlight can shine through it.
